The modern Olympic Games or Olympics are the leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered the world’s foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The Olympic Games are normally held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years in the four-year period.
Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD.
We can deep dive into the history, which would be great as part of an Ancient Greek lesson but that is something to think about for your own lesson.
Right now we are in the midst of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Summer sports include:
- baseball and softball
- basketball (including 3×3 basketball)
- beach volleyball
- canoe / kayak
- cycling (track, road, mountain, BMX)
- equestrian (dressage, jumping and eventing)
- field hockey
- modern pentathlon
- roller sport (skateboarding)
- rugby 7s
- sailing (including windsurfing)
- soccer / football
- synchronized swimming
- table tennis
- track and field
- volleyball (indoor)
- water polo
This year, the Summer Olympics are being hosted in Tokyo, but they have also added several new sports to the games. Below are just some pictures of the facilities.
Now that we have covered a basic history and geographic lesson, lets begin building our own Olympic Games in Minecraft. We did find one mod solely based off the Olympics as you can see down below but in World of Worlds, there was the Rio Olympic village and the Montreal Olympic stadium you can also check out.
Now it is your turn. In Minecraft, create your own Olympic village and stadiums that will accommodate the sports listed above. Get creative with how it works.
Then I challenge you to go into adventure mode and perform your own Olympics. This would be great to do with friends.
*Here is a hint, look up the Olympic Villages from various year’s to get a good idea.
